After creating Assessment learning activities (graded or non-graded), you can fully customize their appearance using our powerful Assessment Builder. This allows you to design visually engaging and interactive assessments that enhance your learners’ course experience.
In this article, we will explore how to use the Assessment Builder’s design tools to personalize the look and feel of your assessments and make them truly stand out.
To begin customizing the design aspects of an assessment, follow these steps:
1. Go to Courses → Course manager and click on the Course outline tab.
2. Hover over the assessment learning activity and click on Edit Questions.
3. In the Assessment builder, click on Design at the tools topbar to navigate to each of the available options.
Theme Explorer
The Theme Explorer allows you to modify various visual elements of the assessment.
You can:
- Adjust colors to match your course theme.
- Modify vertical spacing between elements for better readability.
- Select from different question layout templates to structure the assessment to suit your needs.
Background
The Background tab allows you to modify colors for different sections within the assessment, including:
a. Background
b. Assessment Container
c. Question Description background
d. Question Answer background
e. Top/bottom page shapes
You can detect the specific area being modified from the dashed lines.
Typography
The Typography tab allows you to customize the font type, size, and color for various text elements in the assessment. ÎĄou can adjust the text style for:
- Question descriptions
- Multiple-choice labels
- Input fields & text areas
- Dropdowns
- Linear/rating scales
- File upload button
- Error messages
Navigation
On the Navigation tab, you can control how users progress through assessments. This includes choosing the navigation mode, layout, and button configurations. These settings impact the overall user experience and assessment flow, making it crucial to configure them according to your course design.
There are the primary navigation modes available for assessments:
a. Classic form: In this mode, all questions are displayed in a single scrolling view, allowing users to see all content at once. This is ideal for assessments that require an overview of all questions before submission.
b. Card-based: This mode displays one question or content block at a time, providing a focused approach to assessments. Users can navigate between questions using the next and previous buttons. You can allow the:
- Autonavigation option
- Navigation to previous question
c. Section-based: This mode groups questions into sections, displaying only one section at a time. Users must complete one section before proceeding to the next.
d. Card-based/ Submit as you go: With the Submit-as-You-Go mode enabled, users must submit each question before moving on to the next. This is not available in Form learning activities. This setting is particularly useful for immediate feedback (for specific exam types of questions), as it allows learners to see their results right after answering each question. Additionally, this mode can be configured to allow navigation to previous questions.
Customizing the Navigation Layout, Bar, and Buttons
You can choose between different navigation layouts and choose to show the navigation buttons or the progress bar. The navigation bar and button settings provide flexibility in how users interact with assessments. You can configure the following:
- Previous/Next Button: Enables users to return to previous questions if allowed and navigate to the next one (type, size, format)
- Submit Button: Controls when and how users submit answers (type, size, label).
- Navigation Bar: Determines whether a visual progress indicator is displayed (change the background and progress colors and choose what will show on hover [question index or nothing])
Assessment Viewer
On the Assessment Viewer tab, you can customize options for the assessment interface, allowing you to adjust the appearance and behavior of various elements.
Customizing the Text
To personalize the assessment experience, LearnWorlds allows you to modify the text displayed for:
- Pass/Fail/Pending statuses for exams.
- Completed/Pending statuses for self-assessments.
Click on Change to update the icon for each screen, or enter the desired text in the corresponding text box.
Configuring Timing Elements and Transitions
- Timing Elements: If a time limit is set for the assessment, you can configure how the countdown clock is displayed to users (minimal, circle, ring, clock).
- Transitions: Control how questions appear and disappear. This can enhance user experience by making navigation smoother (no effect, fade, slide horizontal or vertical)
Adjusting Single choice and Multiple choice Effect Button Styles
The style and appearance of buttons can be configured to improve clarity and usability. These options are useful for ensuring accessibility and a consistent visual design throughout the assessment.
Saving and Applying Default Settings
When configuring navigation and assessment viewer settings, you have the option to save them as default settings for future assessments. However, note that certain navigation settings, such as Previous, Next, and Submit buttons, as well as the Navigation Bar, are the only ones saved as school-wide defaults.
